Surviving a Terrifying Encounter: UH Student Robbed at Gunpoint Speaks Out
It was a night that University of Houston sophomore Ricardo Dyer will never forget. Waking up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, Dyer never imagined he would come face-to-face with armed robbers in his own dorm room. In the aftermath of the terrifying ordeal, Dyer is speaking out about his experience and the arrest of suspect Kyliel Denzel Arceneaux, 21.
Dyer recalled the moment when two armed men entered his dorm room at Moody Towers residence hall and pointed guns at him. Despite the fear and uncertainty, Dyer remained calm and complied with the robbers, letting them take his belongings, including his cell phone. He believes he was targeted because of a watch he had been posting about on Instagram, a watch that was luckily being repaired at a jeweler at the time of the robbery.
After the robbers fled, Dyer’s sense of security was shattered. He now finds himself constantly looking over his shoulder, feeling paranoid and anxious in the aftermath of the traumatic experience. However, the news of Arceneaux’s arrest brought some relief to Dyer, knowing that one of the suspects responsible for the robbery had been apprehended.
Prosecutors were able to connect Arceneaux to the robbery at UH through security footage and a tip, linking him to the tragic death of 90-year-old veteran Nelson Beckett as well. Dyer has since moved dorms and taken precautions to protect himself, vowing to be more mindful of what he shares on social media.
As Arceneaux remains in custody on bonds totaling over $7 million, Dyer is focused on moving forward from the harrowing experience and rebuilding his sense of security and peace of mind.
Stay safe and vigilant, and remember to prioritize your safety above all else.
