Welcome to the Weekend Box Office Recap
LOS ANGELES – In a sleepy summer weekend at the box office, holdovers reigned supreme as newcomers landed without a splash.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” reclaimed first place at the North American box office in its fifth weekend with $18.3 million, bringing its cumulative international earnings to over $1.2 billion.
The Walt Disney Co. took the top two spots for the second weekend in a row, with “Alien: Romulus” following closely behind “Deadpool & Wolverine” with $16.2 million in its second weekend. Meanwhile, Disney’s “Inside Out 2” continues to perform well, making $2.1 million domestically in its 11th weekend and surpassing $1.6 billion globally.
Romantic drama “It Ends With Us” maintained its third-place position with $11.9 million in its second weekend, reaching a global total of $242.6 million on a $25 million budget.
The new releases faced a tough market, resulting in “box office déjà vu” as familiar films dominated the charts. However, the upcoming Labor Day holiday is expected to provide a boost to the newer titles as word-of-mouth spreads and more audiences head to theaters over the long weekend.
Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut “Blink Twice,” starring Channing Tatum, opened with $7.3 million and claimed the fourth spot on the charts. The psychological thriller received mixed reviews but earned a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 79% score.
Faith-focused coming-of-age film “The Forge” debuted in fifth place with $6.6 million and received an A+ CinemaScore from audiences.
In the lower rankings, “The Crow” and other new releases like “Twisters” and the re-released “Coraline” struggled to gain traction. “The Crow,” a remake of the 1994 film, opened with $4.6 million.
Overall, holdover films like “Despicable Me 4” and “Inside Out 2” continued to perform well, rounding out the top 10 for the weekend. “Inside Out 2” remains the No. 1 animated film globally, having been on the charts for 11 consecutive weekends.
