Former Democratic State Rep. Shawn Thierry Switches to Republican Party

Months after losing her reelection bid in the Democratic primary, Texas State Rep. Shawn Thierry of Houston has made a surprising announcement – she’s switching political parties.

The former Democrat cited progressive policies that she could no longer support, such as access to gender-affirming care for minors and allowing transgender individuals in women’s sports.

In a lengthy statement on social media, Thierry expressed her disillusionment with the Democratic Party, emphasizing her alignment with the economic and social policies of the Republican Party, including the parental rights movement in education.

“It’s the party of parents, believing that they have the fundamental right to determine the best educational environments for their children to learn, grow, and succeed,” Thierry wrote.

Thierry’s decision to switch parties came after she lost to Lauren Ashley Simmons in the Democratic primary. One notable moment was Thierry’s vote in favor of SB 14, a state law that prohibits gender-affirming care for minors. The law was upheld by the Texas Supreme Court in a June ruling.

The Texas Democratic Party responded to Thierry’s move by criticizing her departure and accusing her of betraying her constituents. However, top Republicans in the state welcomed her with open arms.

Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan welcomed Thierry to the Republican Party, expressing anticipation for her contributions. Governor Greg Abbott also expressed excitement about working with Thierry to build a brighter future.

Thierry acknowledged that she expects backlash for her decision but stated that she would rely on her faith to guide her through this new chapter of her life.
