Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, the Democratic nominee to replace the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, is currently a delegate at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
On the opening day of the convention, Turner made a passionate plea for conservative-leaning independents to consider voting for Kamala Harris. Turner, who served in the state legislature and two terms as Houston’s mayor, highlighted the importance of unity and inclusivity in today’s political climate.
During an interview at the DNC, Turner expressed his concerns about the current state of the Republican party and urged conservatives to consider voting Democrat this year. He emphasized the Democratic party’s welcoming and inclusive nature, stating that there is a place for everyone in the party’s big tent.
Turner also expressed his support for Vice President Harris and Governor Walz, believing in their potential for success on Election Day. He emphasized the importance of grassroots efforts and personal storytelling in winning over voters.
Looking ahead to the November election, Turner will face Republican nominee Lana Centoze after defeating former Houston city councilmember Amanda Edwards in a runoff election to secure the Democratic nomination.
