Why black communities must prioritize foreign policy

When global issues arise in places like Africa, Ukraine, or the Gaza Strip, many Black individuals often question how these events impact their lives. However, U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley and others argue that these international events are deeply connected to our lives in the U.S., specifically in Texas, and even more locally in Houston.

One significant reason for this connection is the influence of U.S. foreign policy on immigration, as highlighted by various social scientists. The negative and paternalistic foreign policy towards Black and Brown nations directly affects how Black and Brown individuals are treated in the U.S. Whether they are citizens or aspiring citizens, the mistreatment, underfunding, and lack of respect stem from America’s foreign policy actions towards these countries.

“The system exhibits hypocrisy in its treatment of immigrants based on their ethnicity,” stated award-winning journalist April Ryan during an interview with Pressley. She emphasized that individuals who resemble minorities often face deportation or struggle to enter the country, while those from nations that align with the mainstream demographic face fewer obstacles.

Here are compelling reasons why the Black community should pay attention to foreign issues and policies, particularly in nations like Haiti, the Congo, and Sudan.

HAITI

Pressley emphasizes the importance of considering foreign policy, especially in the context of Haiti, due to the country’s historical significance in Black liberation movements. The injustices faced by Haitians are deeply rooted in colonialism and unjust foreign policies, which directly influence immigration policies in the U.S. Pressley argues that supporting Haiti’s stability is essential, particularly as many Haitians seek asylum in America.

THE CONGO

The exploitation of the Democratic Republic of Congo holds historical relevance for African Americans, with a significant portion of enslaved individuals originating from this region. Modern-day slavery, human trafficking, and child labor in the Congo highlight the interconnectedness of American lifestyles with the suffering of Congolese people. The demand for minerals like cobalt, essential for technological devices, often leads to human rights abuses in the Congo.

SUDAN

Despite its historical importance as the birthplace of ancient civilizations, Sudan faces ongoing violence and displacement as a result of Western interference. Millions of Sudanese individuals have been displaced, with many seeking refuge in neighboring countries. The humanitarian crisis in Sudan underscores the need for global intervention and support.
