The Rebirth of Houston’s Beloved River Oaks Theatre
Movie buffs and Houstonians were devastated when the iconic River Oaks Theatre closed its doors in 2021, but now there’s exciting news – the theater is set to make a comeback!
In a recent social media post, the theater announced its grand reopening on Thursday, October 3.
If you are a fan of indie films, film festivals, and classic screenings like “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” then the two-screen theater on West Gray was probably one of your favorite spots. Built in 1939, the theater’s Art Deco design and old-school marquee added to its charm.
After facing closure due to the challenges of the pandemic and failed lease negotiations, the theater found a new lease of life when Culinary Khancepts took over in 2022. The new owners have promised a complete renovation to bring the theater back to its former glory.
President and CEO of River Oaks Theatre, Omar Khan, expressed his commitment to preserving this cinematic gem. “We felt as Houston’s only owned and operated cinema companies that it was our duty to save this masterpiece,” Khan said.
The upcoming upgrades include a new roof, a full kitchen, and a curated wine and cocktail menu. But the theater won’t just be showing movies – live performances from musicians, comedians, dancers, and more will also grace the stage.
So get ready to experience the magic of River Oaks Theatre once again as it reopens its doors to entertain and inspire audiences with a mix of art house films and live performances. Stay tuned for a new chapter in Houston’s cinematic history!
