HOUSTON — The hip-drop tackle is a term that is gaining attention, especially after Texans’ running back Joe Mixon suffered an injury during Sunday night’s game against Chicago.
So, what exactly is a hip-drop tackle? According to the league, it occurs when a defender wraps up a ball carrier, rotates his hips, unweights himself, and drops onto the ball carrier’s legs during the tackle. This controversial move was banned by the NFL in 2024.
Following the incident, no discipline has been issued to Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards, who performed the tackle on Mixon. The league is currently reviewing the play, as no flag was thrown during the game.
The NFL and NFLPA made it a rule and an emphasis for a reason. Time to put your money where your mouth is.

Joe Mixon expressed his thoughts on social media, emphasizing the importance of enforcing the rule against hip-drop tackles in the NFL.
Former NFL linebacker Demeco Ryans commented on the issue, highlighting the dangers of hip-drop tackles and the high risk of injuries associated with them.
Despite returning to the game after the injury, Mixon’s performance was limited. It remains unclear whether he will be able to play in the upcoming game against Minnesota.
