Matagorda County Mourns Loss of Two Tweens and Beloved School Worker

The Matagorda County community is currently grieving the loss of three of its beloved residents – two tweens who tragically lost their lives in a car accident and a dedicated school maintenance worker who passed away after a health battle.

On Monday, a prayer vigil was held at the Matagorda County Courthouse to honor Van Vleck High School student Haleigh Matchett, 17, recent graduate Kylie Folmar, 19, and school maintenance worker DeAndre Barnes. Community members from Van Vleck and neighboring areas came together to pay their respects to these individuals.

Many attendees wore red in honor of Haleigh Matchett, a well-loved student known for her friendly and outgoing personality. Her grandmother, Susie Matchett, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, reflecting on Haleigh’s remarkable ability to connect with everyone she encountered.

Tragically, Matchett and Folmar lost their lives in a car accident on SH 35 in Van Vleck when the BMW they were passengers in collided with another vehicle, ultimately striking a power pole and catching fire. The driver of the BMW, who was found in a hospital in Lake Jackson, remains unnamed as the crash is under investigation.

Nicole Folmar, Kylie’s mother, shared her appreciation for the community’s love and prayers during this difficult time. While nothing can bring her daughter back, the support provides a sense of comfort.

Additionally, the family of DeAndre Barnes confirmed his passing on Monday following a private health battle. Barnes dedicated nearly 30 years to the Van Vleck ISD, serving as a valued member of the district and actively contributing to the youth sports programs in the community.

Counselors, school psychologists, and first responders were present at Van Vleck High School on Tuesday to support students and staff as they returned to campus. Superintendent Christie Dement emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity during this challenging period.

Community members have been encouraged to wear orange on Wednesday in honor of Barnes and pink on Thursday in remembrance of Folmar. A memorial along SH 35 serves as a poignant tribute to the lives lost in the tragic accident.

In times of sorrow, it is heartening to witness a community come together to support one another and honor the memories of those who have passed. Matagorda County remains resilient in the face of adversity, demonstrating unwavering compassion and solidarity.
