Be Aware of Text Scams Targeting Drivers, Warns TxDOT

Are you a frequent driver on toll roads? If so, you need to be on the lookout for a new scam that is targeting drivers in Houston. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has reported a significant increase in reports of text scams, and you need to know how to protect yourself.

The scammers are posing as employees of TXTag and sending texts to customers regarding current or missing payments. However, TxDOT has clarified that they would never contact customers about payments via text. If they need to communicate with customers, they would do so using a different number – 22498.

These text phishing scams, also known as “smishing,” have been on the rise since April, according to TxDOT. If you receive any suspicious texts claiming to be from TXTag, do not provide any personal information. Instead, report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center immediately.

Stay vigilant and protect yourself from falling victim to these fraudulent texts. Remember, when in doubt, always verify the source before sharing any personal information.
