The Mass Exodus of Surfside Beach Police Department Officers

Surfside Beach, Texas – The Surfside Beach Police Department was rocked this week as a mass exodus of officers resigned, leaving only one active officer in their ranks. The turmoil began on Monday when the police chief and three other officers handed in their badges. By Wednesday, four more resignations followed, resulting in the promotion of the sole remaining officer to interim chief.

The city’s mayor announced that interviews for new officers would begin on Thursday, but in the meantime, the community will be protected by the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and reserve officers.

Interim Police Chief Kelly Marsh expressed surprise at the sudden turn of events, stating, “This was kind of sprung on me at the last minute and I’m trying to work everything out.”

Allegedly, the resignations stemmed from issues between Surfside Beach City Council and the police department. Officers reported backlash and harassment after enforcing laws prompted complaints from residents with council connections. Some residents accused the former chief of neglecting his duties and creating a hostile work environment.

Despite differing opinions within the community, it is evident that the situation has polarized Surfside Beach. As Detective Robert Bosco, the one inactive officer, plans to resign, tensions continue to simmer.

The community remains divided on the actions taken by the former chief and the subsequent resignations. Regardless, the Surfside Beach Police Department will have to undergo significant changes to rebuild trust and confidence within the town.
