Remembering Landon Payton: Community Gathers for Vigil After Tragic Death

Many questions remain unanswered by HISD after 14-year-old Landon Payton collapsed in the gym at Marshall Middle School and tragically passed away.

The community gathered on Monday night outside Marshall Middle School to honor and remember Landon Payton, the young student who lost his life last week after collapsing in the school gym.

Friends and neighbors came together to support Payton’s family during this difficult time.

“The Bible didn’t tell us how to mourn our children,” said Payton’s family member. “We send them off to school, expecting them to return home, but last week Landon didn’t come home.”

The cause of Landon’s death remains a mystery, leaving the community heartbroken and searching for answers.

The Near Northside Community Response Team organized the vigil, where candles were lit, and prayers were offered in Landon’s memory.

Landon’s family, including his father and siblings, were present at the vigil, finding solace in the support of their community.

As music played and prayers were said, the community released balloons in honor of Landon, their grief palpable in the air.

“A child who was supposed to come home did not even make it out of the school building,” said a community member, reflecting on the tragic loss.

In the wake of Landon’s passing, it was revealed that 170 AEDs across district campuses were not functioning, raising more questions than answers.

Messages of love and support were left on a banner for Landon’s family, as the community pledged to keep his memory alive.

“To the Payton family, today doesn’t end; we’ll be with you forever,” said a member of the community.

KHOU 11 News attempted to speak with Landon’s father, who directed inquiries to his attorney as they await the autopsy report before deciding on their next steps.

As the community continues to mourn the loss of Landon Payton, they remain united in seeking justice and answers.
