Welcome to the New Vehicle Registration Program in Texas!

Exciting changes are coming to the vehicle registration program in Texas, and KHOU 11 News is here to keep you informed. We reached out to Texas DPS and the DMV to get answers about the upcoming changes, so let’s dive in!

Starting next year, Texas is eliminating vehicle safety inspections. However, you’ll still need to visit an auto shop to get a sticker. Many questions have arisen about emissions testing, particularly in counties like Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, and Montgomery. If your vehicle is registered in one of these counties, you will be required to have an emissions test.

But don’t worry, the changes won’t affect everyone. Vehicles that do not require emissions testing will no longer need any inspection when the new law takes effect. This means smoother registration renewal for owners of older vehicles.

One common concern is about the cost. The annual $7.50 safety inspection fee will be replaced with an Inspection Program Replacement Fee, which will be collected at the time of vehicle registration. The bill does not affect emissions inspection fees or the overall cost of vehicle registration.

For more details and to check if your vehicle requires emissions testing, you can visit the Texas DPS website. Keep in mind that you will still need to pay local and state registration fees when renewing your registration.
