Witness the incredible journey of Mirlee Janice Ramirez and her infectious smile, showcasing the remarkable progress she has made in just two short years since KENS 5’s Sarah Forgany first spoke to her mother in 2022.

Flor Ramirez, a former KENS 5 employee, has experienced the unique challenges and joys of raising a child with a rare genetic disorder known as Apert Syndrome. This condition affects the fusion of bones in the skull, hands, and feet.

Now, at two years old, Mirlee Janice Ramirez radiates resilience and determination as she reaches new milestones. Flor proudly shares, “She has excelled and met goals. She’s running. She’s playing. She’s balancing herself.”

During Mirlee’s infancy, Flor navigated the complexities of being a new mom while coping with the unexpected news of her baby’s disabilities. Fears loomed over her regarding the future healing process as Mirlee grew older and required ongoing medical interventions.

Despite facing seven surgeries at a tender age, Mirlee receives unwavering support and therapy from the Children’s Rehabilitation Institute TeletonUSA (CRIT). Occupational Therapist Marites Navarro Graves commends Mirlee’s remarkable progress in motor and feeding skills.

CRIT, established in 2014, has evolved to serve over 350 patients nationwide, offering comprehensive care not only to the individual with disabilities but to their families as well. CRIT’s Business Development Manager, Ana Hernandez, emphasizes the transformative impact of their therapies on families.

While Mirlee thrives within the CRIT facility, outside encounters have been challenging for Flor, as her daughter has faced bullying and stares from strangers. Despite these hardships, Flor remains committed to educating others about inclusivity and acceptance.

As Mirlee continues to defy limitations and embrace new challenges, Flor marvels at her daughter’s accomplishments, like riding a bike, which seemed unimaginable before. Mirlee’s zest for life and determination serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all who cross her path.
