When it comes to gun rights, things can get heated, especially in Texas. The latest battleground is Fair Park in Dallas, where the State Fair of Texas has implemented a ban on all guns, including license-to-carry firearms. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is not having it and has threatened legal action against the City of Dallas if the ban is not lifted.
In a news release, Paxton called the ban “unlawful” and gave the city a 15-day ultimatum to reverse the decision or face a court battle. The city and fair officials have remained tight-lipped so far, but Paxton is not backing down.
The crux of Paxton’s argument lies in the fact that Fair Park is government-owned property, and according to Texas law, license-to-carry holders should not be prevented from carrying firearms on such property. If the ban remains in place, Paxton’s office is prepared to take legal action to protect gun owners’ rights.
But the State Fair of Texas is standing firm on its decision, citing safety concerns following a shooting incident last year. The fair’s new policy prohibits all guns on the premises, except for current or retired peace officers.
Despite calls from lawmakers, including Texas House Representative Brian Harrison, to rescind the policy, fair officials maintain that it is necessary for public safety. They have bolstered security measures with hundreds of armed police officers, staff, and other security personnel to ensure a safe event for all attendees.
It remains to be seen how this standoff will unfold, but one thing is certain – the debate over gun rights at Fair Park is far from over.
