Darryl George Fights Back Against Hair Discrimination in Barbers Hill School District

Darryl George, an 18-year-old Black high school student in Texas, has taken a stand against discrimination over his hairstyle. After facing nearly a year of in-school suspension for his hair, he made the difficult decision to leave the Barbers Hill school district. However, George is determined to return for his senior year and has asked a federal judge to issue a temporary restraining order to allow him back while his lawsuit proceeds.

In August, U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Brown dismissed most of the claims in George’s lawsuit, but allowed the gender discrimination claim to proceed. The judge also questioned the school district’s strict hair length rule and its potential harm.

In a heartfelt affidavit, George pleaded with Judge Brown to help him return to school like a normal teenager, emphasizing the impact of the district’s actions on his education and mental well-being. A court hearing has been scheduled for October 3rd to address George’s request.

Despite the district’s defense of its dress code as a means to teach discipline and respect, George’s attorneys argue that his suspension led to emotional distress and a nervous breakdown, forcing him to leave his original school.

George’s departure, though a survival necessity, was not his preferred outcome. His desire to return is evident, especially since his mother had chosen the area for its quality schools. His lawsuit also invokes the CROWN Act, a state law protecting against race-based discrimination of hair, which the district has been accused of violating.

George’s case is not the first to challenge Barbers Hill’s hair policy, with previous lawsuits highlighting the district’s discriminatory practices. As the fight for equality continues, George’s determination to return to school serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up against injustice.
