Major Changes Coming to Annual Vehicle Inspections in Texas
Big news for Texas drivers, especially those in the state’s major metropolitan cities like Houston, where emissions tests will soon be required for vehicles registered in certain counties. But, starting January 1, 2025, the requirement for annual state inspections for non-commercial vehicles will be a thing of the past.
The Texas Department of Transportation recently announced this change, following the signing of House Bill 3291 into law in 2023. While the state inspections may be eliminated, a small fee of $7.50 will be added to vehicle registrations to compensate for the loss.
However, it’s important to note that drivers in counties around major cities such as Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, and El Paso will still need to pass emissions tests. This includes counties like Harris, Fort Bend, Galveston, Montgomery, and more. San Antonio residents will also join the list in 2026.
Commercial vehicles across the state will continue to require safety inspections, regardless of the county they are registered in.
With changes coming to the state’s Vehicle Safety Inspection Program, you may be wondering how you and your vehicle are impacted.
Texans whose vehicles are registered in emissions counties will still be required to have emissions tests.
