STOP COMING FOR SIMONE BILES & CO.
The 2024 U.S. Olympic Women’s Gymnastics Team, including Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Hezly Rivera, Jade Carey, and Sunisa Lee, achieved great success in Paris, winning gold medals and excelling individually. However, criticism from a former teammate, MyKayla Skinner, sparked controversy before the Olympics. Skinner’s comments about the team lacking talent and drive were perceived as reinforcing negative stereotypes about Black athletes. In response, Biles posted a celebratory photo of the 2024 team with the caption, “Lack of talent, lazy, Olympic champions.”
JAMAICAN FAM
August is an important month for celebrating Black history, including the birth of Marcus Mosiah Garvey, a significant figure in the fight for racial equality. Garvey, a Jamaican native, played a crucial role in empowering Black communities worldwide. Yet, some still refuse to acknowledge Jamaicans and individuals of Jamaican heritage as Black. This misconception undermines the contributions of prominent figures like Bob Marley, Naomi Campbell, and Colin Powell. It’s crucial to recognize Black unity and support within our community.
UNITED AIRLINES’ HUGE FUMBLE
NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Davis faced a distressing ordeal on a United Airlines flight, where he was wrongfully accused and detained in front of his family. Despite being cleared of any wrongdoing, United Airlines banned him from future flights, causing further distress. The lack of transparency and compassionate response from the airline raises concerns about their treatment of Black passengers. It’s crucial for companies to address issues of discrimination promptly and transparently.
Support the Defender
Our pledge is to elevate solutions, share successes, and amplify the experiences of Black people. We cannot do it alone.
