Erica Lee Carter is stepping up to continue the legacy of her late mother, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, by running in the special election for the 18th Congressional District.

Governor Greg Abbott has called for a special election on Nov. 5, which coincides with the general election. In her announcement, Carter expressed gratitude for the community’s support during this challenging time and revealed that many had encouraged her to complete her mother’s term.

After careful consideration, Erica Lee Carter has decided to enter the race, stating, “The answer is YES.” This news comes shortly after NAACP Houston President James Dixon expressed his intention to run but pledged to support Carter if she decided to run.

In a statement released following Carter’s announcement, Bishop James Dixon reaffirmed his commitment to support her in finishing her mother’s unexpired term, praising Erica for her strength and determination.

The special election aims to complete Sheila Jackson Lee’s current term, which ends in January. Meanwhile, the Democratic nominee for District 18 in the Nov. 5 election is still up for grabs, with multiple candidates vying for the position.
