Chemical Fire Evacuation Zone Expanded in Rockdale County
Authorities in Rockdale County, Georgia, have expanded the evacuation zone for a chemical fire after flames reignited at the BioLab facility on Old Covington Highway. Deputies have closed multiple roads in the area, and I-20 is blocked in both directions between Salem Rd and Turner Hill.
The sheriff’s office is urging residents to avoid the area and follow detour signs. Those living near the facility have been evacuated to designated shelters, including JP Carr Gym in Conyers and Wolverine Gym in Covington.
Residents in the northern part of the county are advised to stay indoors, while those in the southern part are considered safe. Authorities have asked residents within a specific area to evacuate to a safe location, as shown in the graphic below.
No injuries have been reported so far, but authorities are working to remove the chemicals and assess air quality with the help of the EPA. Residents are advised to stay updated on the situation through the Rockdale County website or by calling the Emergency Management hotline at 770-278-8300.
