The Importance of Prostate Cancer Awareness

Prostate cancer is the second-leading cancer killer of men. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, shedding light on the importance of early detection and prevention. One in eight men will be diagnosed during their lifetime, making it crucial for men to be proactive about their health and well-being.

Alejandro Andrade, a 63-year-old chemical engineer, husband, father of two, and cancer patient, emphasizes the significance of regular check-ups and screenings. Six years ago, an annual checkup revealed an elevated PSA level, prompting Alejandro to closely monitor any signs of the slow-growing cancer. Thanks to early detection through an MRI and biopsy, Alejandro was able to undergo a minimally invasive treatment known as irreversible electroporation, or the nano-knife, which targets and kills cancer cells while preserving healthy tissue.

Dr. Stephen Canfield, a urologist at UT Physicians, explains the importance of individualized treatment options for prostate cancer patients. While more radical treatments, such as prostate removal, may have long-term consequences like erectile dysfunction and incontinence, gentler approaches like early detection through blood tests can lead to less invasive interventions with minimal impact on quality of life.

Genetic factors also play a role in prostate cancer risk, with family history and gene mutations increasing susceptibility. Regular screenings, especially for those with a family history of the disease, are crucial in catching the cancer early and ensuring prompt treatment.

As Alejandro emphasizes, taking control of your health through routine check-ups and screenings can make a significant difference in detecting prostate cancer early and choosing the most effective treatment options. By staying informed and proactive, men can reduce their risk and prioritize their well-being.
