Remembering U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee: A Week of Honoring a Legacy
This week, the city of Houston comes together to honor and remember the late U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who passed away on Friday, July 19, after bravely battling pancreatic cancer.
Flags at Houston City Hall and municipal buildings will be flown at half-staff from Monday, July 29, through Thursday, Aug. 1 as a mark of respect for Jackson Lee’s contributions and service.
Monday, July 29: Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee lies in state
On Monday, July 29, Jackson Lee’s body lied in state at City Hall from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Members of the public were able to pay their final respects and sign a book of condolence following a brief prayer service with the late Congresswoman’s family, city leaders, and faith leaders.
Tuesday, July 30: Viewing and remembrance
A viewing and remembrance ceremony will take place on Tuesday at God’s Grace Community Church from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Wednesday, July 31: Viewing and service
Wednesday features a viewing at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by a Community Farewell and Appreciation service from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Thursday, August 1: Celebration of Life service
The week of honoring Sheila Jackson Lee will culminate in a Celebration of Life Service at Fallbrook Church at 11 a.m. Pre-registration is required for this event.

Sheila Jackson Lee, fondly known as “Congresswoman,” dedicated over 30 years of her life to public service. Her impactful legislative wins include the establishment of the Juneteenth Federal Holiday and the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. Born in Queens, New York, Jackson Lee served on the Houston City Council before being elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1995.
Her recent victory in the Democratic primary showcased her commitment to her constituents. As a senior member of multiple Congressional committees, Jackson Lee left a lasting legacy in Houston and beyond.
