Texas Attorney General Sues to Block Ban on Firearms at State Fair

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit Thursday seeking to block a ban on firearms at the State Fair of Texas, one of the state’s biggest annual celebrations. Fair organizers had announced the ban in response to a shooting incident last year that left three people wounded, but Paxton, a Republican, challenged the ban on the grounds that Texas law allows gun owners to carry firearms in places owned or leased by government entities unless prohibited by law.

Paxton’s lawsuit has stirred debate among lawmakers and event organizers. The City of Dallas, which owns Fair Park where the State Fair is held, stated that the fair is a private event operated by a non-profit entity and not under the city’s jurisdiction. The fair officials have yet to comment on the lawsuit.

The State Fair of Texas, dating back to 1886, offers a variety of attractions including midway games, car shows, and the iconic Texas Star Ferris Wheel. The fairgrounds also host the annual college football game between the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma.

Guns not allowed at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

Paxton’s legal action raises questions about similar bans at other major events in Texas such as RodeoHouston and sporting events held at venues like NRG Stadium, Minute Maid Park, and Toyota Center. RodeoHouston prohibits all firearms and weapons on its premises to ensure a safe and family-friendly environment.

Bags are routinely checked at major events in Houston to enhance security measures. Most venues now require clear purses to be brought in for public safety reasons.
