Rep. Ana-María Rodríguez Ramos Enters Crowded Race for Speaker of the Texas House

It’s been nearly two decades since Texas had a Democratic Speaker of the House, but Rep. Ana-María Rodríguez Ramos is determined to change that. The North Texas Democrat is the only Democrat, so far, to join the crowded race for Speaker of the Texas House.

With Democrats holding just 64 out of the 150 seats in the Texas House, it’s an uphill battle for Rep. Rodríguez Ramos. However, she remains optimistic about her chances, believing that the composition of the House could shift with the upcoming elections.

In a field that includes six Republican candidates, Rodríguez Ramos faces tough competition. But she sees her campaign as an opportunity to bring about change and promote bipartisanship in the House.

One of the key differences between Rodríguez Ramos and the other Republican candidates is her commitment to inclusivity. While some GOP contenders have vowed not to appoint Democrats as committee chairs, Rodríguez Ramos has stated that she would be open to appointing Republicans to leadership positions if elected.

The upcoming election for Speaker of the Texas House is scheduled for the first day of the session on Jan. 14, 2025. In the meantime, early voting will run from Oct. 21 to Nov. 1, with election day on Nov. 5.

Rep. Rodríguez Ramos’s bid for Speaker reflects a desire for change and collaboration in the Texas House, setting the stage for a competitive and potentially historic race.
