NEW YORK – Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy is set to release her first memoir in fall of 2025, inspired by the death of her mother.

Titled “Mother Mary Comes to Me”, the memoir will delve into Roy’s personal journey following the loss of her mother in September 2022. Mary Roy, a prominent educator whose life was depicted in Roy’s acclaimed novel “The God of Small Things”, was a significant influence on the author’s life and work.

In a statement, Roy expressed her deep connection to the book, explaining, “I have been writing this book all my life. Perhaps a mother like mine deserved a writer like me as a daughter. Equally, perhaps a writer like me deserved a mother like her. Even more than a daughter mourning the passing of her mother, I mourn her as a writer who has lost her most enthralling subject.”

In addition to her Booker Prize-winning novel, Roy has penned other notable works such as “The Ministry of Utmost Happiness” and several influential nonfiction books. Scribner, the publisher of her memoir, describes the upcoming book as an “astonishing, often disturbing and surprisingly funny” narrative that traces Roy’s life from childhood in Kerala to adulthood in Delhi.
