The Houston Police Department’s Fight Against Suspended Cases

Chief J. Noe Diaz recently announced that the Houston Police Department has launched a new dashboard to track the progress of cases that were previously suspended due to staffing shortages. Despite making strides, the department continues to face challenges that led to the controversial use of codes to close over 260,000 incident reports.

The dashboard allows the community to monitor the status of these cases and see how they are being addressed. Chief Diaz emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in dealing with these issues.

Following the fallout from the code controversy, former Houston Police Chief Troy Finner was relieved of his duties in May. The city has taken steps to address staffing concerns by approving funds for additional cadet classes and increasing compensation for cadets by $10,000.

However, the staffing challenges are not isolated to the police department. The Houston Fire Department has also been impacted, prompting the launch of a reemployment program for former classified members who have been separated from the department within the past five years.
