Houston woman found dead following reported apartment fire

Tragedy struck an apartment complex in Houston’s Third Ward on Sunday morning when a woman was found dead inside her apartment following reports of a fire. The Houston Fire Department responded to the scene on Truxillo Street near Texas Southern University after receiving a call about a possible fire with people trapped at 11:56 a.m. Despite no signs of fire or smoke from the exterior, firefighters discovered a woman inside the apartment surrounded by soot and smoke. HFD Deputy Chief J. Pennington confirmed that the fire had already been extinguished by the time they arrived.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and it was determined that she was the only person inside the apartment at the time of the incident. Thankfully, smoke detectors were in working condition and alerted authorities to the situation. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, and investigations by Arson, Houston Police Homicide, and Crime Scene Units are underway. The medical examiner’s office was also called to the scene to assist in the investigation.
