The City of Houston Cracks Down on Illegal Pedicabs

Looking for a unique way to get around Houston? You might want to think twice before hopping into an illegal pedicab. The City of Houston announced that they will be impounding unauthorized pedicabs starting next week to ensure the safety of riders heading to and from events in town.

Concerns from major event venues like NRG and Minute Maid Park have prompted this crackdown on unlicensed pedicabs that have been operating recklessly. With the Astros beginning their postseason run, the city is taking action to target these illegal operators.

Frank Pipkins, a die-hard Astros fan and pedicab operator, expressed his excitement for the upcoming postseason games but also his apprehension about unlicensed pedicab operators taking advantage of the increased business opportunities. He emphasized the importance of ensuring a positive market impact and upholding safety standards.

Alonso Quintanilla, owner of Rollout Productions and a licensed pedicab operator, voiced his support for the city’s initiative, emphasizing the priority of safety for all riders. With events like the MLB playoffs and the Houston rodeo attracting unpermitted pedicab operators, the need for regulation and enforcement is clear.

Starting October 1, Houston police will be towing and impounding illegal pedicabs to ensure that riders are getting into safe and permitted vehicles. The goal is to prevent unlicensed operators from putting customers at risk and to create a successful and safe environment for events like the Astros playoffs.

Officials and licensed pedicab operators are urging customers to ask for proof of permit, license, and insurance before getting into a pedicab. By displaying proper credentials and adhering to city regulations, both operators and riders can contribute to a positive and secure experience.

Let’s support a safe and successful Astros playoff run by ensuring that all pedicab operators are licensed and permitted. Together, we can enjoy the excitement of Houston events without compromising on safety.
