The 8th Annual “Safe Walk Home Northside” Honors Josue Flores

Every year since the tragic murder of 11-year-old Josue Flores in 2016, state and local leaders gather at Marshall Middle School for the annual “Safe Walk Home Northside” event. This year marked the 8th anniversary of the tradition, where the community comes together to remember Josue and emphasize the importance of student safety.

Joined by representatives from the Houston Police Department and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the event was filled with music, laughter, and goody bags for the students. The organizers made sure to provide snacks and supplies to the children, creating a festive atmosphere while also highlighting the significance of supporting students and ensuring their well-being.

Stella Mireles-Walters, a key figure in Safe Walk Home Northside, urged everyone to continue supporting the initiative, emphasizing the value of each student’s life and educational journey.

The family of the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who had been a dedicated participant in the event, attended to honor her memory. They presented a commendation to the organization’s founder as a tribute to Lee’s commitment to the cause.

Remembering Josue Flores

In May 2016, Josue Flores was brutally murdered while walking home from school by Andre Jackson, who stabbed him more than 20 times. Richard Guerra, a witness in Jackson’s 2022 trial, testified that Josue begged for his life before collapsing and ultimately succumbing to his injuries on the sidewalk.

The impact of Josue’s death resonated deeply within and beyond the northside community where the tragedy occurred. In 2022, Jackson was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
