The tragic death of 14-year-old Landon Payton at HISD’s Marshall Middle School has raised concerns about the lack of planning, support, and resources for HISD nurses, according to the Houston Federation of Teachers.

Reflecting on the incident, Houston Federation of Teachers President Jackie Anderson criticized the leadership at HISD, stating, “It just speaks to the incompetent leadership that we have in HISD. My heart goes out to the parent.”

There are still unanswered questions surrounding Landon’s death, especially regarding the circumstances leading up to it. Landon’s Father, Alexis Payton, expressed his desire for closure and a full understanding of what transpired.

During a meeting with HISD officials, Payton watched police body camera footage but was unsatisfied with the lack of information. He claims that someone admitted they did not know how to perform CPR or use a defibrillator, raising further concerns about the preparedness of school staff.

While Anderson expressed skepticism about the nurse’s alleged lack of CPR knowledge, she highlighted the systemic issue of inadequate resources for HISD nurses. Nurses have reported a lack of basic supplies like Band-Aids, impacting their ability to provide essential care.

Superintendent Mike Miles addressed the tragedy but did not take questions, emphasizing their focus on supporting the family during this difficult time.

A makeshift memorial has been set up outside Marshall Middle School in memory of Landon, with a prayer vigil planned for Monday.

As the community mourns the loss of Landon, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper planning, resources, and support for schools to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
