Addressing the critical shortage of healthcare workers in Texas, Houston Community College (HCC) and Dwyer Workforce Development have launched the state’s first pre-apprenticeship program in healthcare. This groundbreaking initiative aims to bridge the gap between education and employment, providing students with the skills and support they need to pursue careers in the healthcare field.

The demand for healthcare workers in Texas is on the rise, with almost 40% of certified nurse assistants (CNAs) leaving the profession in the last decade. The state’s senior population is also expected to double by 2050, highlighting the urgent need for trained healthcare personnel. The Gulf Coast Region Apprenticeship Hub Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program prepares students for in-demand healthcare roles in hospitals, doctor’s offices, and long-term care facilities.

Dr. Christina Robinson, Executive Director of Work-Based Learning and Industry Partnerships at HCC, highlighted the success of the full apprenticeship program with Dwyer and emphasized the importance of creating a talent pipeline for the healthcare industry. The pre-apprenticeship program offers students wraparound support services, including childcare, transportation, and access to technology like laptops, to ensure their academic success.

Ulises Gonzalez, a participant in the program working towards becoming a registered nurse, shared his experience gaining hands-on training and real-world skills. The program helped him navigate stressful situations, develop essential healthcare knowledge, and solidified his career choice. Maria Darby, Chief Operating Officer of Dwyer Workforce Development, emphasized the program’s goal of empowering participants to make informed career decisions and providing them with the resources they need to succeed.

The program is open to individuals interested in entering the healthcare field, and Darby encouraged applicants to explore the opportunities offered by the pre-apprenticeship. For more information and to apply, visit HCC’s website or contact apprenticeship.hub@hccs.edu.
