Houston City Council to Vote on New Police and Fire Chief Nominations

Exciting changes are on the horizon in the City of Houston as Mayor John Whitmire’s nominations for police and fire chief are up for approval by the City Council on Wednesday morning.

Former Fire Chief Samuel Peña will be replaced by Orlando “Thomas” Muñoz, while J. Noe Diaz will take on the role of police chief, following the retirement of former Chief Troy Finner. The City Council meeting, where the nominations are expected to be confirmed, will be streamed live on KHOU 11.

Meet J. Noe Diaz

J. Noe Diaz, who has served as the chief of the Katy Police Department for the past five years, is set to take on the new role as police chief in Houston. With a background in law enforcement, Diaz’s top priorities include addressing staffing issues and resolving past cases. Despite the significant difference in the size of the police force he is about to lead, Diaz remains confident in his ability to make a positive impact.

Meet Thomas Muñoz

Thomas Muñoz, previously serving as deputy director for the Mayor’s Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security, will step into the position of fire chief in Houston. With over 26 years of experience as a first responder, Muñoz is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of both residents and firefighters in the city. His background in emergency management and homeland security makes him well-equipped for the role.
