It’s a sad day at the Houston Zoo as they share the news of a tragic incident involving a red river hog piglet. The days-old piglet was attacked by another hog in the group and unfortunately did not survive. The zoo expressed that such aggression can be common in the wild as animals establish social hierarchies. Despite the heartbreaking loss, the zoo’s dedicated team is closely monitoring the hog family and appreciates the support from the community.

This news comes shortly after the zoo introduced the piglet to the public, with red river hog Pinto giving birth to her first offspring just a few days prior. The piglet was expected to bond with its mother behind the scenes before making its debut in the exhibit.

“We appreciate your understanding and support during this challenging time,” the Zoo’s message said Sunday morning. “Our dedicated animal care team continues to monitor our red river hog family closely to ensure their well-being. Thank you for being part of our Zoo family.”
