Student safety is a top priority for Houston Independent School District, especially in light of recent threats, hoaxes, and a troubling stabbing incident at Sterling High School. Addressing these concerns, HISD Police Chief Shamara D. Garner spoke out on Thursday to reassure the community and provide insight into the actions being taken to ensure a safe learning environment.
Following the stabbing incident involving a 17-year-old student, district police are working closely with the district attorney to determine appropriate charges. Additional security measures were implemented at Sterling High School, including the use of metal detectors and increased officer presence to reassure students and parents.
Chief Garner emphasized the importance of visitor management and reporting systems to maintain a secure campus environment. In times of crisis, the district activates lockdown procedures and secure modes to protect students and staff. Garner also highlighted the seriousness of making threats, stating that even seemingly harmless actions can result in criminal charges if they incite fear.
In response to the incident, metal detector wands may be used at Sterling High School, though the duration of this measure was not specified. Despite the unsettling events, classes continued as usual, a decision made by district administration to maintain a sense of normalcy for students.
