Grand Canyon Waterline Breaks Impact Multiple Hotel Options
Wanderers planning a scenic retreat to the Grand Canyon may need to reconsider their options as multiple hotel facilities inside the national park will be closed starting Thursday due to significant breaks in the waterline. The Grand Canyon National Park is enacting Stage 4 water restrictions on the South Rim beginning August 29, following four substantial breaks in the Transcanyon Waterline that spans 12 1/2 miles to supply water from the canyon for park use.
According to a recent release, the park has been grappling with water supply challenges since July 8, and currently, water is not being pumped to either the South or North Rim. This has led to the closure of hotel facilities operated by Xanterra, including El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, Maswik Lodge, and Phantom Ranch, as well as Delaware North’s Yavapai Lodge and Trailer Village. However, overnight accommodations outside the park in Tsayan remain unaffected.
Despite the closures, the park will remain open for daily exploration. Services such as South Rim food and beverage options, the Grand Canyon Clinic, and the Post Office will still be available. Additionally, the North Rim’s Grand Canyon Lodge and other visitor services, including the campground, will continue as usual.
Visitors are urged to assist in water conservation efforts by limiting showers to five minutes or less, being mindful of water use when washing or brushing, and reporting any leaks. For those venturing into the backcountry, it is essential to carry enough water or water treatment options.
With over 85 significant breaks since 2010, the Transcanyon Waterline is undergoing a multi-year, $208 million rehabilitation to ensure reliable water delivery. The project is slated for completion in 2027, with support from the Great American Outdoors Act providing funding for necessary upgrades.
