One of Dawson’s greatest legacies is his role in shaping the careers of Rockets legends such as Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in bringing top talent to Houston, including Charles Barkley, Steve Francis, Clyde Drexler, Yao Ming, and Tracy McGrady. Dawson also led the charge in forming the Houston Comets of the WNBA, a team that achieved unparalleled success with four consecutive titles.

Reflecting on Dawson’s profound influence, current Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta remarked, “We will deeply miss his uplifting spirit, infectious humor, and kind-hearted nature.” Fertitta also announced plans to honor Dawson’s legacy by hanging a banner in his honor at the Toyota Center, alongside other Rockets legends.
