During his illustrious tenure with the team, Dawson witnessed and contributed to some of the Rockets’ most memorable moments, including all four of the team’s NBA Finals appearances. His impact was felt not only on the court but also behind the scenes, where he served in various roles, including coach and general manager.
One of Dawson’s greatest legacies is his role in shaping the careers of Rockets legends such as Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in bringing top talent to Houston, including Charles Barkley, Steve Francis, Clyde Drexler, Yao Ming, and Tracy McGrady. Dawson also led the charge in forming the Houston Comets of the WNBA, a team that achieved unparalleled success with four consecutive titles.
Reflecting on Dawson’s profound influence, current Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta remarked, “We will deeply miss his uplifting spirit, infectious humor, and kind-hearted nature.” Fertitta also announced plans to honor Dawson’s legacy by hanging a banner in his honor at the Toyota Center, alongside other Rockets legends.
