Breaking news out of Houston as four men have been charged by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for their involvement in a seven-month crime spree targeting small businesses. Augustine Uresti, Ricardo Middleton, Torrean Potts, and Ronnie O’Bryant are facing charges related to burglary, arson, and engaging in organized crime.
During their crime spree, the group targeted at least 76 mom-and-pop businesses, stealing over $300,000 in cash and causing more than $100,000 in damages. Their targets included bars, restaurants, and other local establishments in downtown Houston, the Heights, and Montrose.
One of the affected business owners, Vu Troung, described how the burglars broke through multiple doors and a safe to steal cash from his establishment, Phoenix on Westheimer. Mark Clayton, the owner of Squable in the Heights, expressed concern over the impact of the break-ins, noting that some businesses had to shut down due to the losses incurred.
Jacob Selena from the Organized Crime Division at the district attorney’s office highlighted the collaborative effort of multiple agencies in bringing the perpetrators to justice. He mentioned that the ring may have been responsible for other burglaries and that mug shots are not being released at this time.
Despite the challenges faced by the affected businesses, there is relief that the individuals responsible have been apprehended. Torrean Potts, who was out on bond for another burglary case, was denied bond, while Middleton was given an $80,000 bond. Uresti and O’Bryant are also facing legal proceedings for their involvement in the crimes.
