Uncovering the Truth Behind Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star
Since its inception in 2021, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star (OLS) has been shrouded in controversy. Advertised as a solution to the border crisis ignored by Washington, OLS has only led to the tragic deaths of Texas National Guardsmen serving on the frontlines.
Despite receiving support from former President Donald Trump and other conservative leaders, the true impact of OLS cannot be ignored. During a recent hearing of the Texas House Committee on Defense & Veterans’ Affairs, the Texas Military Department (TMD) revealed that 17 OLS soldiers have lost their lives while carrying out their duties.
The Tragic Toll
These soldiers met their ends in various ways, from drowning while attempting to save migrants to suicides and negligent discharge of personally owned weapons. This grim reality underscores the dangers faced by those on the frontlines of Abbott’s controversial operation.
While Gov. Abbott expressed condolences for the fallen soldiers, questions remain about the effectiveness and treatment of troops involved in OLS. U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro has been a vocal critic of the operation, labeling it a “rogue” and ineffectual endeavor.
Multiple Guardsmen have come forward anonymously to share their experiences, detailing substandard living conditions, lack of protective equipment, and a lack of empathy for their well-being following the deaths of their comrades.
A Lack of Recognition
One poignant example of the disregard for these soldiers’ sacrifices is the case of Guardsman Bishop Evans, who drowned in the Rio Grande while attempting to save migrants. His family received no compensation until public outcry led to the passing of the Bishop Evans Act.
Despite this legislation, TMD’s director of state administration revealed that many claims for compensation were either denied or unfulfilled due to various reasons, leaving families of fallen guardsmen without proper recognition or support.
Looking Ahead
The revelations about OLS paint a troubling picture of a poorly executed operation that has claimed the lives of brave soldiers without adequate support or recognition. As the debate over immigration continues to dominate political discourse, it is essential to remember the human cost of such endeavors and ensure that those who serve their country receive the respect and support they deserve.
