Candra Rogers Update: Assistant Principal Blinded in One Eye After Classroom Incident
Candra Rogers, an assistant principal at Collins Intermediate School in Corsicana, Texas, recently gave an update on her injury from a disturbing incident that occurred on Aug. 15. The incident resulted in Rogers being blinded in one eye and facing the possibility of losing her eye altogether.
Rogers shared that during a reported disruption in a classroom, an angry student threw a hanger at her, hitting her right eye and causing it to come out of its socket. The impact was so severe that Rogers had to be rushed to the hospital for treatment, where it was determined that she had lost vision in that eye permanently. She is also awaiting reconstructive surgery on her eyelid, with the potential of having her eye removed.
Despite the severity of her injury, Rogers remains hopeful for a miracle and restoration of her sight. She emphasized the need for increased safety measures in classrooms, highlighting the dangers that teachers face when dealing with aggressive students.
One student has been taken into custody following the incident, and charges are expected to be filed. The school authorities have restricted the student from campus, ensuring the safety of other students and staff.
As Rogers continues her recovery, there is no timeline for her return to work. She expressed concerns about the lack of funding in Texas public schools, attributing it to the challenges faced by both students and teachers. Despite a budget surplus, Rogers criticized the state legislature’s decision to maintain funding at 2019 levels, putting educational institutions at risk.
Furthermore, Rogers spoke out against Governor Abbott’s support for private school vouchers, underscoring the differences in requirements between public and private schools. Public schools are mandated to accept all students, regardless of their backgrounds and needs, unlike private institutions.
