Welcome to Houston’s Drinking Water Update!
Are you experiencing a different taste and smell in Houston’s drinking water? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Houston Public Works has been receiving reports about changes in the taste and odor of the city’s water supply, similar to what happened in 2021.
Houston Public Works conducted tests and discovered that the water contains natural compounds like geosmin and MIB (2-methyl isoborneol), which are harmless but can give the water a musty or earthy taste and smell.
But not to fret, there are simple ways to improve the taste of your drinking water:
- Enhance with a slice or drop of lemon
- Use a carbon filter
- Chill the water or add ice
Concerned about your water quality? Reach out to 311 or visit this website for more information.
City officials attribute these changes in water quality to warmer surface water temperatures and direct sunlight. They anticipate the taste and odor alterations to dissipate in a few days as they continue to monitor the situation across the city.
