Welcome to CenterPoint’s Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative Blog
CenterPoint Energy recently announced the launch of the next phase of its Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative (GHRI) in response to the devastating impact of Hurricane Beryl. The GHRI aims to strengthen and modernize the energy system, improve response times, enhance communication, and develop stronger partnerships ahead of the 2025 hurricane season.
Phase 2 of the GHRI includes several ambitious actions, such as installing new poles to meet extreme wind standards, trimming or removing higher-risk vegetation across power lines, and launching a public emergency preparedness campaign. The goal is to reduce outages and provide 125 million fewer outage minutes annually for customers in the Greater Houston area.
CenterPoint President and CEO, Jason Wells, emphasized the importance of reliable and resilient energy for their 2.8 million customers, stating, “We are committed to developing the self-healing grid of the future that our customers expect and deserve.” The company aims to build the most resilient coastal grid in the country and has already completed Phase One of the GHRI, meeting 40 out of 42 commitments.
Looking ahead, CenterPoint’s long-term goals include hardening key infrastructure, enhancing grid security, and investing at least $5 billion from 2026 to 2028. This investment represents the largest in the company’s nearly 160-year history and is part of a larger capital investment plan totaling more than $21 billion in its Texas electric and gas systems from 2025 through 2030.
