The Race for Texas Votes: Beto O’Rourke Pushes Voter Registration
The clock is ticking for Texans to register to vote – the deadline is Oct. 7. With 48 days remaining until Election Day, both political parties are ramping up efforts to register new voters. Democrat Beto O’Rourke, as part of his Ready To Vote college tour, visited the University of Houston to encourage young people to get involved in the political process.
“This state presents unique challenges when it comes to voting and voter registration, so we need to work extra hard to engage those who are not yet registered,” O’Rourke emphasized during his visit.
Over the next 19 days, college campuses across Texas will be battlegrounds for voter registration campaigns. O’Rourke, along with the group Powered by the People, is working tirelessly to register as many voters as possible, with a focus on first-time voters like Danielle Ruiz, who stated, “It’s time to make my voice heard.”
Young people who registered on the campus expressed a sense of energy and enthusiasm, particularly noting the impact of Vice President Kamala Harris on the campaign trail. With Harris resonating more with young voters, Democrats in Texas are hoping to leverage this enthusiasm to boost their margins in the upcoming election.
O’Rourke’s plan includes traveling to various college campuses across the state for voter registration drives leading up to the deadline on Oct. 7. While efforts are underway to mobilize Democratic-leaning voters, there is a notable absence of response from Republican student groups at UH, highlighting the intensity of the political battleground in Texas.
If you haven’t registered yet, make sure to do so before the Oct. 7 deadline to have your voice heard in the upcoming election.
