Rookie Pitcher Spencer Arrighetti and Closer Josh Hader Shine in August
Major League Baseball has recognized two Houston Astros pitchers for their outstanding performances in August. Rookie pitcher Spencer Arrighetti, a standout from Cinco Ranch High School, has been named the American League’s Rookie of the Month, while left-handed closer Josh Hader has been honored as the AL’s Reliever of the Month.
Spencer Arrighetti’s Stellar Performance
During the month of August, Arrighetti posted impressive stats, going 3-2 with a 1.95 ERA and holding opponents to a batting average of .168. He made history by becoming only the second rookie since 1901 to strike out 47 batters while allowing just 19 hits. Some of his standout moments include:
- Aug. 4: 12 strikeouts vs. Tampa Bay
- Aug. 10: 13 strikeouts in a single game at Boston
- Aug. 18: 10 strikeouts without giving up a hit until the eighth inning
Josh Hader’s Dominance in the Bullpen
Hader, a seasoned player, received his sixth career Reliever of the Month award in August. He showcased his talent by going 3-1 with eight saves, maintaining a 0.68 ERA, a .071 opponent batting average, and a 0.60 WHIP. Hader also struck out 17 batters during the month.
Among AL relievers, Hader ranks second in strikeouts with 90 and is tied for second in saves with 29 for the season.
Astro’s Strong Presence in August
This marks the first time since 2019 that two Astros players have received monthly awards in the same month. Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez were the last duo to achieve this feat when Bregman won Player of the Month and Alvarez won Rookie of the Month in August 2019. Recently, Bregman and Alvarez were also named AL co-Players of the Week.
