The Remarkable Journey of Michael Strahan: From TSU to NFL Glory

Walter Highsmith, the former head football coach at Texas Southern University, still chuckles at the unconventional way he first encountered Michael Strahan in the late 1980s. It all started with a phone call from Highsmith’s friend and former New York Giants teammate, Art Strahan, who mentioned his nephew had just returned from Germany and showed promise in football. Intrigued by the young man’s potential, Highsmith wasted no time envisioning Strahan as a future tight end for the Tigers.

“One thing people don’t understand, everything a kid do is the way he was raised. He had a good upbringing. It’s just things that happen.”

Despite having played only one season at Westbury High School, Strahan’s impressive physical attributes, standing at 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, caught Highsmith’s attention. Eventually, defensive coordinator C.L. Whittington made the case for transitioning Strahan to the defensive end position, a move that proved to be a game-changer.

As Strahan blossomed into a star player during his tenure from 1989 to 1992, he set records, garnered All-American honors, and solidified his reputation as the SWAC’s premier defensive talent. His journey, however, was far from over.

His transition to the New York Giants saw Strahan emerge as a dominant force, impressing not only with his skills but also with his charismatic persona. Following his illustrious NFL career, Strahan transitioned seamlessly into a media standout, juggling roles on ABC’s Good Morning America and Fox NFL Sunday. Today, he stands as one of Texas Southern University’s most esteemed and recognizable alumni.

Just a class act, high character guy. I’m not surprised he is doing what he is doing because always handled himself and carried himself in a good way. Just an easy going, jokester, fun dude.
