Bobby Joe Espinosa: Former Harris County Deputy Constable Convicted of Theft
Former Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constable, Bobby Joe Espinosa, found himself in hot water after being convicted on a theft charge on Monday. The jury will soon decide his fate.
Prosecutors revealed that Espinosa would frequently visit businesses in full uniform and demand money from the owners. One business owner testified that Espinosa demanded a $400 monthly payment, and when he couldn’t comply, Espinosa resorted to taking the owner’s watch. The victim, intimidated and afraid, refrained from seeking help from law enforcement at the time.
Another victim, with the assistance of Vietnamese translators, shared a similar experience. Espinosa arrived at the business and ordered everyone out except for a cashier. He spent 30 minutes inside, tampered with the cash register, stole $1,200, and then left without a word. The business owner also discovered that his camera system had been deactivated during the incident.
Investigators uncovered that Espinosa had stolen over $5,000 from four different businesses over a span of seven months.
As the sentencing looms, Espinosa could face probation or up to 20 years in prison. It is noteworthy that he has two children. The verdict is set to be announced on Tuesday.
