The Waltrip High School Marching Band Fundraiser
After a brief setback, the Waltrip High School marching band is revving up their fundraising efforts for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Parade in New Orleans. Initially, Houston ISD hesitated to approve the trip, citing safety concerns, but with the support of the community and Mayor John Whitmire, the band has received the green light to perform on a national stage.
For the band, this parade isn’t just about showcasing their talent on TV; it’s a morale booster and a chance to represent their school and city on a grand scale. Businesses in the area, like La Mex in the Garden Oaks Stomping Grounds Center, have rallied behind the band, offering their support by donating proceeds to help fund the trip.
The band booster club’s online fundraiser was impacted by the initial delay, causing them to lose valuable time to raise funds for this prestigious honor. However, band members like Jacob Gamez remain determined to make the trip a reality. If they raise enough money, they will join other bands in marching through the French Quarter ahead of the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal on New Year’s Eve.
This trip is a dream come true for these hardworking band members who have earned their spot among the five bands selected nationally to perform at the Sugar Bowl. With the community’s support, they are one step closer to making this unforgettable experience a reality.
