Remembering Zinetta Burney: A Legacy of Justice Advocacy
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Zinetta Burney, a longtime community activist and justice advocate in Harris County. A native Houstonian, Burney’s impact on the community was profound, serving as a law partner, justice of the peace, and a steadfast advocate for criminal justice reform for women and people of color.
The Celebration of Life for Burney will be held on Thursday, Oct. 10, at the Shrine of the Black Madonna Cultural and Events Center in Houston. The event is expected to be filled with attendees eager to pay their respects to this local icon.
As tributes pour in for Burney, one quote stands out, encapsulating her spirit and impact on the community. Deloyd Parker, Co-founder & Executive Director of SHAPE Community Center, remarked, “Elder Zinetta Burney is a perfect example of how adversity can transform into a life of giving, loving, sharing, caring, and so much more.”

Zinetta Burney’s legacy will live on in the hearts of many in the community. Ken Rodgers, a member of the Emancipation Economic Development Council, described her as a “justice and community champion who will be missed.” Local politico Nata Koerber shared, “Judge Burney was my mentor, guiding me through the political landscape with wisdom and grace. Her journey from humble beginnings to becoming a prominent figure in the community is a testament to her resilience and generosity.”
Prior to her tenure as a justice of the peace, Burney practiced law for over three decades, advocating for equality and justice at every turn. She was a proud alumna of Texas Southern University and its Thurgood Marshall School of Law, where she honed her legal skills and commitment to serving others.
“I’m saddened to hear that Judge Zinetta Burney has died. She and I go way back. She was a good person, and I appreciated the work she did throughout the Houston community.” – John Whitmire, Mayor of Houston
Zinetta Burney’s impact extended beyond the legal realm. She served on various boards, including the University of Houston System Board of Regents and the Housing Authority of the City of Houston. Her dedication to community service and advocacy for marginalized communities set her apart as a true leader.
As we mourn the loss of Judge Burney, let us reflect on her remarkable life and the indelible mark she left on Houston and beyond. Her daughter, Harris County Justice of the Peace Sharon Burney, follows in her mother’s footsteps, carrying on her legacy of justice and compassion.
