Why Black Americans Should Care About Foreign Issues and Policy
When global events such as those in Africa, Ukraine, or the Gaza Strip come up, many Black Americans tend to dismiss them as irrelevant to their lives. However, U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley and other experts argue that foreign issues have a significant impact on the lives of Black Americans within the country.
One crucial aspect is the link between U.S. foreign policy and immigration. Social scientists suggest that America’s unfavorable foreign policies towards Black and Brown nations directly influence how these communities are treated within the U.S. This connection is especially relevant to Houston, where many residents have ties to these countries.

HAITI
Pressley emphasizes the historical and cultural significance of Haiti to the Black community in the U.S. She points out how Haiti’s struggles with colonialism and unjust foreign policies have led to its destabilization, prompting many Haitians to seek asylum in the U.S.

THE CONGO
The exploitation of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has deep-rooted connections to the U.S., with one in four enslaved African Americans originating from that region. The modern-day mining practices in the Congo, particularly for cobalt used in electronic devices, perpetuate human rights abuses and environmental degradation.
Addressing these issues requires a reassessment of consumption patterns and a call for ethical sourcing practices to prevent the exploitation of vulnerable populations in the DRC.
SUDAN
The historical significance of Sudan, once home to the Nubian civilization, underscores the importance of addressing the ongoing violence and displacement within the country. Decades of Western interference have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, displacing millions of people.
As a society that has benefited from the contributions of the Nubians, it is imperative for the global community to support efforts to stabilize Sudan and provide aid to those affected by the conflict.
By understanding the interconnectedness of foreign issues with domestic policies, Black Americans can advocate for a more just and equitable approach to international relations. Our collective actions can help address the root causes of global challenges and pave the way for a more inclusive and compassionate society.
