Meet Mark Barr: The Inspiring Triathlete and Trauma Nurse

At the age of 38, Mark Barr has achieved remarkable feats in both his professional and athletic careers. Despite losing a leg to bone cancer as a teenager, Barr has defied the odds and excelled in the world of triathlons. When he’s not competing in high-stakes races, Barr works as a dedicated nurse in the trauma surgical ICU in Houston.

Recently, Barr represented Houston in the men’s PTS2 triathlon in Paris, where he clinched the bronze medal. This victory underscored his tenacity and skill in the face of adversity. Jules Ribstein of France claimed the gold, while American Mohamed Lahna secured the silver.

Triathlon events were rescheduled in Paris due to concerns about the water quality in the Seine River after heavy rains. Despite the challenges, Barr persevered and showcased his remarkable athleticism.

Having lost his right leg to bone cancer during his teenage years in Davis, California, Barr has been a beacon of resilience and determination. He competed in swimming at the Athens and Beijing Paralympic Games and was an NCAA Division 1 swimmer for California Polytechnic State University.

Following his collegiate career, Barr ventured into the world of triathlons, culminating in a near-medal finish at the Rio Paralympics in 2016. His exceptional talent has been recognized with numerous World Championships medals, including gold in PTS2 and silver in PT2.
