Busy Labor Day Weekend at Houston Airports
More than 880,000 people were expected to travel through Bush and Hobby Airports this weekend, with Monday projected to be one of the busiest days.
Houston’s airports are bustling as travelers make their way home after the Labor Day weekend. With an estimated 880,000 people passing through the airports from Friday to Monday, the city is seeing a significant influx of passengers.
To ease the travel process, airport officials have advised passengers to allocate extra time and pre-book parking. Despite some traffic congestion near the international arrivals area, traffic at Bush Airport remained steady on Sunday.
Sunday evening showed typical traffic backups on South Terminal Road, though some travelers were able to navigate the terminal C parking garage with ease. Monday morning is expected to see a surge in arrivals, with over 70 flights projected between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m.
The Houston Airport System anticipates almost 500 arriving flights on Monday, compared to 450 on Sunday at Bush Airport. The peak day for passengers was Friday, with 148,000 travelers counted, slightly lower than Memorial Day weekend’s busiest day with 158,000 passengers.
While the summer travel season is winding down, the airport is preparing for future traffic improvements. Construction of a new eight-lane international curb is set for completion by Christmas, enhancing traffic flow on South Terminal Road.
Parking garages were not at full capacity as of Saturday afternoon, but many lots were over 90% occupied. Patience and extra time may be needed for travelers returning home on Labor Day from Bush or Hobby airports.
