Tragedy Strikes: Dallas Police Officer Shot and Killed in the Line of Duty
Sources have revealed to WFAA that a tragic incident took place involving a Dallas Police Department officer on Thursday evening. The officer was shot and killed, while two other officers sustained injuries.
The unfortunate event unfolded around 10:10 p.m. when DPD officers responded to a distress call in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered a male officer had been shot in his squad car.
During the encounter, two officers engaged in a gunfire exchange with a male suspect at the scene, resulting in both officers being wounded, according to DPD reports.
Following the shooting on East Ledbetter Drive, a high-speed chase ensued on I-35E, eventually leading to Lewisville. The suspect, armed with a long gun, was fatally shot by Dallas police officers in the 1000 block of Stemmons Freeway, as per the Lewisville Police Chief.
Subsequent investigations indicated that none of the Lewisville officers discharged their weapons during the incident, leading to the suspect’s death at the scene. The suspect’s identity is yet to be disclosed.
Meanwhile, the affected lanes on I-35E at SB-121 Business Road remained obstructed on Friday morning, diverting drivers to the Corporate exit.
The three DPD officers have been hospitalized at Baylor Scott & White and Methodist Dallas Medical Center, with one officer succumbing to injuries, another in critical condition, and the third in stable condition.
In a solemn speech, DPD Communications director Kristin Lowman urged the community to offer prayers for the fallen officer, the injured officers, and their families during this challenging time.
The show of support was evident as many officers gathered at Methodist Hospital, expressing solidarity and respect through salutes. The Lewisville Police Officers’ Association, on Facebook, conveyed their thoughts and prayers for their colleagues in blue.
As a mark of respect, flags at all city facilities will be lowered to half-staff in honor of the fallen officer. The investigation into the incident is currently in progress.
